New, with questions

Hey, I'm new here. Some of you may know me as "valientlink" on YouTube, and most of you may not, haha.
Anyway, when it comes to hacking FF6, I'm kind of an illiterate. I know how to edit monster scripts, change dialogue, text, sprites, item/spell names, how spells act, etc... but I don't know how to change battle text, or really go more specific on how spells work. It's not like I can make ice 2 black, or make fire 2 look like ultima, I'm not like that. Any tips?
