Sprite Help - Gilgameshversion - 06-03-2010

her guys and gals uhh this thread is about you the super awesome sprite hackers giving little ol me some tips and stratergies for making custom sprites this could be used for others aswell.

My current stratergy is to put a ff3se next to the image im working on but i only zoom x11 should i go more indepth and go 20x for the hair and such?

RE: Sprite Help - SSJ Rick - 06-03-2010

to be perfectly honest with u.....don't use ff3se.....trust me

you are much better off using the other editor (PM me with your email if you do not have it)

the reason why is because you edit every single detail of the sprite, which is why it is a much better tool, other then that, you can always save after editing each tile which means u can go back to fix mistakes other then that you can extract the bin files which provide you with the dead n riding sprites

hair is usually the biggest pain in the ass 2 do, the key is consistency if you can make it look good, and relatively similar you can tackle anything else

as for speed, it all depends on the mood I am in really

but honestly it can take a few days to a week depending on a person's pace

then again, it is possible to do it in a matter of hours if you really haul ass and put your work in

RE: Sprite Help - Zeemis - 06-03-2010

I use a program called Graphics Gale to do the sprite editing. I can set up the 16x24 grid and place them all in it. I can change colors the same way I do with FF6SE.

RE: Sprite Help - LordSutebenu - 06-03-2010

To be honest I use both FFSE and FF6usSpriteEditor. I first use FFSE to get most of the work done (plus it is much easier to edit hair and capes with the program) then I use FF6usSpriteEditor to do the riding and death sprites which at the same time fixes the small glitch with the forward walking hands.

Like Poco said, it really depends on the person on how long it takes.

This is my fighter so far can you guess who i based him off? yeah he's not finished yet (isin't it a rule not to upload unfinished things? sorry if it is) i did the basic colouring in ff3se then used sprite editor for everything i think its ok for now oh and should i make him shorter to match the original? and i will take critism but only if it'll help me nothing like "you suck at sprite editing" cuase i already know that lol

RE: Sprite Help - SSJ Rick - 06-04-2010

my advice to you is more shading, in order to provide better detail, my best advice to you would be to look @ his 2 shades of hair and make them a brighter and darker red, and seeing as how his outfit is the same red, use those same colors for his clothing, as for the white, I suppose you can add another shade in it

but as for his hair, I recommend looking @ my Bartz sprite sheet as a reference seeing as how Bartz' hair is similar to that of the fighter, also look @ Cyan or an imperial soldier for some parts of the armor Wink

RE: Sprite Help - LordSutebenu - 06-04-2010

My advise would be to not limit yourself so much. The Fighter sprite really only requires two things: the character be a male with crazy hair and that there be red. Throw in a few other colors, make his armor more like armor and add details to it like gold buckles and gilded designs or such.

RE: Sprite Help - Gilgameshversion - 06-04-2010

okie doke il get to that but in my ff3 screen shot (i nearly got the last 2 job classes yay) the fighter has that hair style but in battle its like bartz's hair i made him like the original for zeemis's ff3 hack thats why i was "limiting" myself but umm what exactly is shading? is it the shadow? i doubt it do you mean more creative colours? since its my 1st il follow all your tips and make a prototype then i might make a proper 1 (cuase the original is a touch smaller isin't it?)

RE: Sprite Help - SSJ Rick - 06-04-2010

ooo I see I thought u wanted to make 1 from scratch, in that case I might as well make a fighter then Wink

RE: Sprite Help - Gilgameshversion - 06-06-2010

ah nerts (pardon my language) i deleted the fighter sprite and cant get him back (welli could if i actually tried) i started doing the ninja and sage classes ninja is so easy atm becuase shadow is preaty much him just a recolour in the ff3 hack zeemis should make shurikens equipable like in the original (there was no throw command you equipped shurikens then threw em strongest damage very expensive cuase u lose them after) and i finally got the ninja and sage classes on ff3 YAY FOR SCREENSHOTS i can give you my rom if you wanna be at the end of the game for hacking purposes or to kick the dark satoascor- i mean "dark cloud"'s ass Tongue
